Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large russet potatoes (about 2 pounds), thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
- In a bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, then half of the onions. Pour half of the cream mixture over and sprinkle with half of the cheese. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 50 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes, until bubbly and golden. Check doneness with a fork.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving to help layers set.
Notes
Use russet potatoes for best texture. Thin slicing is key to even cooking. Letting the dish rest enhances texture. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
