Salisbury Steak recipe

Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

  • Author: Navy Sinclair
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This classic Salisbury steak is the ultimate comfort food, juicy beef patties nestled in a rich mushroom gravy, perfect for cozy dinners and family favorites.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter version)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or any preferred cooking oil)
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined to avoid tough patties.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties. Don’t worry about perfect shapes!
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and sear the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
  4. Using the same skillet, sauté the mushrooms for about 5 minutes until they are golden and tender.
  5. Add the beef broth to the skillet and bring to a gentle simmer. For a thicker sauce, dissolve the cornstarch in a bit of cold water and stir it into the broth gradually.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer for 10-15 minutes so they cook through and soak up the gravy flavor.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired. Excellent with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed veggies!

Notes

You can shape the patties a day in advance and store them in the refrigerator. Leftovers reheat wonderfully, just add a splash of beef broth while warming. These also freeze well; cool completely before storing in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
