Description
This classic Salisbury steak is the ultimate comfort food, juicy beef patties nestled in a rich mushroom gravy, perfect for cozy dinners and family favorites.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter version)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
- 1/4 cup finely diced onion
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or any preferred cooking oil)
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined to avoid tough patties.
- Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties. Don’t worry about perfect shapes!
- In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and sear the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
- Using the same skillet, sauté the mushrooms for about 5 minutes until they are golden and tender.
- Add the beef broth to the skillet and bring to a gentle simmer. For a thicker sauce, dissolve the cornstarch in a bit of cold water and stir it into the broth gradually.
- Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer for 10-15 minutes so they cook through and soak up the gravy flavor.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired. Excellent with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed veggies!
Notes
You can shape the patties a day in advance and store them in the refrigerator. Leftovers reheat wonderfully, just add a splash of beef broth while warming. These also freeze well; cool completely before storing in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
