Description

There’s something undeniably comforting about a bowl of homemade vanilla custard. Whether served on its own, layered in a dessert, or poured over fruit, its smooth and creamy texture adds a touch of indulgence to any treat.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 large egg yolks

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, cream, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat until it begins to steam; don’t let it boil.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until fully combined.
  3. Slowly pour half of the hot milk mixture into the yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. Return the egg mixture to the saucepan and continue stirring over medium heat until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let it cool slightly before transferring to serving dishes.
  6. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly on the surface, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Avoid boiling the mixture to keep the custard smooth. Tempering the eggs is crucial to prevent scrambling. Chill thoroughly for best texture.
