Homemade Nougat Bars

  • Author: Navy Sinclair
  • Total Time: 30 minutes plus setting time
  • Yield: 16 bars 1x

Description

Soft, chewy, and perfectly sweet, Homemade Nougat Bars are a nostalgic treat that’s surprisingly easy to make. These bars combine airy whipped nougat, crunchy nuts, and a kiss of honey to create a dessert that’s perfect for sharing or savoring on your own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 2 cups chopped nuts (almonds, peanuts, or your favorite)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Line an 8×8-inch baking dish with parchment paper, allowing some to hang over the sides for easy removal later.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Heat over medium until the sugar dissolves, then increase heat to boil. Cook until it hits 250°F.
  3. While the syrup heats, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form using a hand or stand mixer.
  4. Carefully pour the hot syrup into the egg whites while mixing on low speed, then increase to medium until mixture is stiff and glossy.
  5. Fold in the chopped nuts, honey, vanilla, and salt until well mixed.
  6. Transfer the nougat mixture into the lined baking dish and spread it evenly. Let it rest at room temperature for several hours or until firm.
  7. Once set, lift the nougat out using the parchment and cut into bars. Enjoy!

Notes

Use a candy thermometer to avoid over- or undercooking the syrup. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months. For a flavor twist, add a touch of almond extract.
