Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup unsalted butter (can use margarine)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups graham cracker crumbs (or crushed cookies)
- 1 cup chopped nuts (pecans or almonds, optional)
- 1 cup chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white)
Instructions
- In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in granulated sugar, brown sugar, and corn syrup. Continue stirring until the mixture begins to bubble.
- Let it boil without stirring for about 5 minutes, or until it turns a light golden caramel color. Gently swirl the pan if needed.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Fold in graham cracker crumbs and nuts, if using.
- Spread mixture evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Press it down firmly with a spatula and allow to cool completely.
- Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave. Drizzle over the cooled toffee and smooth out with a spatula. Let the chocolate set.
- Cut into squares or bars and serve.
Notes
Add crushed peppermint candies on top during the chocolate drizzle step for a festive twist. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
