- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 500g ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 200ml dry red wine
- 400g can of chopped tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil, for garnish
- Pasta of your choice, to serve
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrot, and celery. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks. Let it brown evenly for 5-7 minutes.
- Pour in the red wine, simmer for 5 minutes to cook off the alcohol.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, oregano, and basil. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Lower the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally for best results.
Notes
To deepen the flavor, add a touch of nutmeg or finish with a splash of milk or cream. This sauce freezes well, so feel free to make extra for later meals.
