Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (or substitute with bread flour for a softer texture)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (honey or maple syrup works as a swap)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (or adjust if using fresh yeast)
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed (can use almond milk instead)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (or coconut oil for a vegan alternative)
- 3 large eggs (or flax eggs for a plant-based option)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Vegetable oil for frying (canola or peanut oil also work)
- Optional glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar mixed with 2-3 tablespoons milk or water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center and sprinkle in the yeast.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the warm milk with the softened butter. Once slightly cooled, pour it into the dry ingredients.
- Add the eggs and mix until a dough comes together. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and stretchy.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm area for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.
- After rising, punch down the dough and roll it out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into donut shapes and place on parchment-lined trays.
- Let the cut donuts rise again for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the donuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden, then transfer to paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- If desired, dip in glaze or coat with sugar while warm for a delightful finish.
Notes
To enhance the flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the dough. You can also mix cinnamon or nutmeg into the sugar for a spiced twist. Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temp for a couple of days.
