Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp lemon juice)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, folding gently until just mixed. Stir in chocolate chips if using.
  5. Divide the batter into the donut pan, filling each section about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in the pan briefly before moving to a wire rack.

Notes

Avoid overmixing to keep the donuts light and airy. For added flavor, try a dash of cinnamon. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze for longer storage.
