Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp lemon juice)
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan with non-stick spray.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, folding gently until just mixed. Stir in chocolate chips if using.
- Divide the batter into the donut pan, filling each section about 2/3 full.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in the pan briefly before moving to a wire rack.
Notes
Avoid overmixing to keep the donuts light and airy. For added flavor, try a dash of cinnamon. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze for longer storage.
